AdhanTV privacy policy
Last updated: 3 November 2026. Applies to AdhanTV (nl.adhan.box) version 2.2 for Android TV.
In short
- AdhanTV has no account, no ads and no analytics. It is free.
- The developer collects no personal data. Nothing is sold or shared. The only exception is the version from adhantv.net: its update check reaches the developer's own site, whose servers keep the usual short-lived request log (see below).
- The app only goes online to fetch the things you set it up for: your mosque's prayer times, the Islamic dates when they are set to follow Saudi Arabia or Turkey, and an MP3 you ask it to download. The version from adhantv.net also looks there for a newer version of the app.
- Your settings, the log and your own sounds stay on the device.
- The log only leaves the device if you scan its QR code with your phone and send the e-mail yourself.
What the app sends over the internet
AdhanTV connects to the internet in exactly three cases, and the version from adhantv.net in a fourth (below). The three requests go straight from your device to the service named, never through the developer. The app sends no account details, device identifiers, advertising ID, location or cookies.
- Your mosque's prayer times, from mawaqit.net. Only when your prayer times come from a mosque. The app loads the public page
https://mawaqit.net/nl/<mosque id>, where the mosque id is the last part of the link you typed (for exampleibrahim-maassluis). This happens when you check a mosque, when you choose it, and after that about once a week (sooner after a failed attempt), so the times stay up to date. What is sent: that page address and the app's name in the request (user agent "Mozilla/5.0 (AdhanTV)"). What the app keeps from the page: the mosque name, the prayer times and the mosque's correction of the Islamic date. When you calculate the times for a city instead, this request is not made. - Islamic dates, from api.aladhan.com. Only when the Islamic date is set to the dates announced in Saudi Arabia or Turkey. You choose that under Settings › Prayer times › Islamic date and Ramadan; the app also sets it for you when you pick a city in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait or Turkey. The app then asks for four months of dates (last month to two months ahead) when you choose this, and after that about every three days (sooner after a failed attempt), with addresses like
https://api.aladhan.com/v1/gToHCalendar/11/2026?calendarMethod=HJCoSA(orDIYANET). What is sent: the month, the year and the name of the calendar, with the user agent "AdhanTV". Nothing about you or your location. - An adhan you download from a link. Only when you type a link under Settings › Adhan › More options › Own adhans and press Download. The app requests that address once (a link starting with
http://is first tried overhttps://) and saves the audio file on the device. What is sent: the request for that address, with the user agent "Mozilla/5.0 (AdhanTV)".
The version from Google Play is updated by Google Play. The version you download from adhantv.net updates itself instead: when the home screen opens it reads https://adhantv.net/update.json (at most every six hours while the app runs) to see whether there is a newer version, and only when you choose Update does it download that version from adhantv.net and hand it to Android's installer, which asks you to confirm. What is sent: the request for those addresses, with the user agent "AdhanTV/" and the app's version number. adhantv.net is the developer's own site. Its hosting company and Cloudflare, which delivers and protects the site, keep the usual short-lived request log (IP address, time, the address asked for and the app version) only to run and protect the site; it is not used to identify or follow anyone and not shared for any other purpose.
As with any internet connection, these services see your device's IP address and the time of the request. Their own privacy policies apply to that. AdhanTV is an independent app and is not affiliated with Mawaqit, AlAdhan or any site you download a sound from. The requests to mawaqit.net, api.aladhan.com and adhantv.net always use an encrypted (https) connection.
Calculating prayer times for a city, the month overview, the 99 Names screensaver, the themes and the QR code all work on the device, without internet. The app contains no third-party code for advertising, analytics or crash reports; the libraries it uses (Android Jetpack, Kotlin, the Adhan prayer-time library and ZXing for the QR code) work offline.
What stays on your device
- Settings: your mosque or city (or the coordinates you entered), calculation method, minutes per prayer, profiles, sound choices and volumes, theme, language and the settings PIN.
- Stored data: the prayer times of your mosque and the Islamic dates the app fetched, so it keeps working without internet.
- The log: a short record of what the app did, such as "Prayer times fetched", "Alarm set", an adhan that played or a step that did not work. It can contain the name of your mosque or city. It keeps no more than the newest 250 lines, is emptied every week, and you can clear it at any time under Settings › Lock and help › Log.
- Your own sounds: audio files you downloaded or copied into the app's folder (
Android/data/nl.adhan.box/files/adhans).
The app does not ask for your location: a city or coordinates you enter are only used to calculate the times on the device. AdhanTV turns off Android's app backup, so none of this is copied to a cloud backup. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its storage in the Android settings, deletes all of it.
To show whether everything is set up correctly, the app also reads a few Android settings on the device, such as HDMI-CEC, the screensaver and whether its permissions are on. That information is only shown on the screen and is never sent anywhere.
Sending the log, only if you choose to
If you need help, you can choose Settings › Lock and help › Log › Send log. The TV then shows a QR code. The TV itself sends nothing. When you scan the code with your phone, your phone's mail app opens an e-mail to the developer, addressed to the contact address shown next to the code. It contains the app version, the Android version, the device's maker and model, where your prayer times come from (the mosque or place name) and the newest log lines. You can read it first, and nothing is sent until you press send on your phone. The developer uses such an e-mail only to look into your problem and reply to you, and does not share it with anyone. You can ask for it to be deleted at any time.
Permissions and what they are used for
- Accessibility service ("AdhanTV" under Accessibility): used for one action only, putting the device back in standby after the adhan, the same as pressing the power button (Android's "lock screen" action). The service is set up so that it cannot read the content of the screen and receives no events from other apps. It reads, collects, stores and shares nothing. Before Android's screen for it opens, AdhanTV explains this and asks you to agree. You can switch it off at any time under Accessibility; the adhan still plays, and the device then stays on afterwards.
- Display over other apps: used only to show the adhan screen at prayer time, also when the device comes out of standby (Android lets an app open a screen from the background only with this permission), and for the optional prayer break, a countdown screen on top of other apps for the minutes you chose.
- Exact alarms ("Alarms & reminders"): so the adhan starts exactly at the prayer time. The app plans one prayer at a time, and plans again after a restart or a change of the time or time zone.
- Notifications, foreground service and full-screen alarm: while the adhan plays, the app shows a notification with a Stop button, and at prayer time it may open the adhan screen directly.
- Start at boot, keep awake, turn the screen on: so the alarms are set again after the device restarts, and the device can wake up and stay awake for the adhan.
- Device admin (only on Android 7 and 8): these older versions don't have the standby action above, so the app asks for device admin instead. It uses only the "lock the screen" policy, to put the device in standby after the adhan. You can turn it off under Settings › TV control › Turn off device admin, which you need to do before uninstalling the app on those versions.
- Internet: for the requests described above.
- Install apps (only the version from adhantv.net): to hand a downloaded update to Android's installer. Android asks you to allow it once, and asks you to confirm every update.
AdhanTV does not ask for location, camera, microphone, contacts, storage or phone permissions.
Children
AdhanTV is made for households and is not directed at children under 13. It collects no personal information from anyone, children included. The settings can be locked with a PIN, so children can't change them.
Changes to this policy
When the app changes in a way that affects this policy, for example a new kind of internet request, this page is updated before that version is released, with a new date at the top.
The website adhantv.net
- No cookies, no analytics, no tracking. The pages load no fonts, scripts or images from other sites. The only exception is the contact page, see below.
- Hosting. The site runs on a rented web server and is served through Cloudflare, which protects it against attacks and makes it faster. Like any web server, they log requests (IP address, time, the page and the browser's user agent) for security and keep those logs for a limited time. The developer does not use them to follow visitors.
- The contact form. What you type in the form (your name, e-mail address, subject, device and message) is sent by e-mail to [email protected] and is used only to answer you. It is not shared with anyone and is deleted when it is no longer needed, or sooner if you ask. To keep out spam, the contact page uses Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks in your browser that you are not a bot; for that check Cloudflare processes technical details such as your IP address and browser, under Cloudflare's privacy policy. The form also keeps a one-way hash of your IP address for at most a day, to limit the number of messages per visitor.
- Downloads and updates. Downloading the app or checking for a new version (update.json) is an ordinary request to the web server, as described above.
